Three Ayrshire Girls in top ten at Gleneagles

The final of the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters was played over the Queens Course, Gleneagles on Sunday 12th October. Unfortunately fog delayed the start by 2 hours so the competition needed to be cut to 14 holes due to failing light for the later starters.

Rachel Irvine (Largs) and Mhairi McKay (West Kilbride) qualified through Ayrshire County while Katie McGarva qualified through her home club Barassie.  Emma Hale was also at Gleneagles as Troon Bentinck's qualifier.  After the first qulaifier all these girls made it through Regionals to get to Glenealges.

From a field of 30 girls Rachel finished in 3rd place with 28 stableford points, Katie was 5th with 26 points on a count-back and Mhairi was 7th with 27 points.

A very creditable performance - congratulations to all of you.

Mhairi McKay (West Kilbride) had the best scratch score, a 78, round Milngavie on 30th July in the West Girls' medal.

Mhairi was also the top nett silver player with a 68 against a CSS of 70, SSS 71.

Rachel Irvine (Largs) was 1st handicap bronze with a nett 73 playing off 24.  Rachael completed the hatrick at Milngavie, having also finished top bronze player in two previous West medals at Kilmacolm and Troon Portland.

Both girls have had substantial handicap reductions this season, Mhairi coming from 16 to 9.5 and Rachel from 33 to 24.  Well done girls - your hard work is paying off, keep it up!

Rachael McQueen successfully defended the Ayrshire Girls St. Nicholas Trophy on Sunday (30th August) at Ardeer.  Rachael had an excellent net 67 to win by 5 strokes over closest challenger Mhairi McKay (West Kilbride).  Rachael's gross 68 makes her the qualifier for the Daily Telegraph Competition.  However, she is already on the leaderboard with a 4 under which she recorded in Troon's qualifier.  We should know soon if this is good enough to take her to Abu Dhabi in November - fingers crossed!
