Wee Wonders

Two Ayrshire girls won through the regional qualifying of the HSBC Wee Wonders Tournament played over Troon's Craigend Course on Thursday 3rd July to book their places in the Grand Final at St Andrews from 23rd - 24th August.

Competitiors have 36 strokes to start and the winner is the player who reaches furthest round the course.  Connie Jaffrey (West Kilbride) finished on the green of the 10th hole in the 11-12 years girls category, while Hazel McGarvie (Bentinck) finished on the 8th green in the 7-8 years age group.

Well done girls and hope you keep up this good form for the finals!

Sensational  at  St Andrews!

Terrific golf from two of our young girls resulted in 8 year old Hazel McGarvie (Bentinck) winning her age group in the Grand Final of the Wee Wonders Tournament, and 11 year old Connie Jaffrey (West Kilbride) finishing in 2nd place in her 11 - 12 age group at the weekend.

Regional qualifiers from throughout G.B. and Ireland play 2 rounds over Saturday and Sunday in this scratch competition.

Over the 9 hole Balgove Course, Hazel was the overnight leader by 2 strokes following a fine 37 in her 1st round.  She continued her good form on Sunday, but not before adding a few tense moments at the last hole.  Her long dowhill putt from the back of the green pulled up some 3ft. short leaving a knee knocker to complete the round.  Hazel calmly stroked it into the back of the hole for a round of 36.  (It was much tougher for Mum and Dad watching!)

The ll - 12 year olds' final was played for the first time over 18 holes.  The Strathtyrum course is a relatively short, flat course, SS 67, but has troublesome rough and gorse to grab any errant shots.  There was also a strong right to left wind on both days and with very tricky pin placements, precision shot making was required.  Connie played solid golf, but she too gave her Dad some anxious moments on the last hole on Sunday.  Taking a wood from what appeared to be a risky position, it didn't quite come off, she then hit a magnificient iron shot which continued over the shoulder of the green at the back.  However, an excellent pitch and putt secured a great 5 showing nerves of steel under pressure!

Connie's 78, 77 for 155  was the leading score by an ll year old girl and well below her handicap.  The winner was and English girl who plays off 8 whose scores were 73, 78.

Hazel and Connie - Ayrshire congratulate you both on your splendid achievements.  Your demeanour and etiquette on and off the course was a joy to watch, and always remember "keep those smiles" - golf is fun!
